Event Description:
Religious Studies Program Spring 2019 Lecture Series

Professor George Dunn University of Indianapolis “Common Humanity, Religious Particularity, and the Virtue of Hospitality ” Religions both “bind and blind” us. They bind communities together by creating a sense of common purpose and shared source of meaning. But the intensity of those bonds can also blind us to the humanity of those living outside our group. In our increasingly globalized world, where individual destinies are deeply entwined with those of every other human being on our planet, some have argued we can no longer afford religious divisions and must cultivate more cosmopolitan identities. Does religion menace our globalized world? Must religious particularity give way to cosmopolitanism? And is a global community founded exclusively on values rooted in our common humanity really possible—let alone desirable?
