Event Description:
30 Years After Global 1989

1989 has been called a year of courage of miracles. In that year, millions of people worldwide bravely took to the streets to challenge an unbearable status quo. “Thirty Years After Global 1989” revisits three moments of global importance: the collapse of Soviet-style dictatorships in central and eastern Europe, the brutal crushing of the youth-centered democracy movement in China at Tiananmen Square, and the beginning of the end of the Apartheid regime in South Africa, in order to examine their lasting consequences for today’s societies and politics more than a generation later. What have we learned from the momentous forces driving these changes? What do we understand when we trace the global trajectories of the vision of liberal democracy and the freedoms associated with it over time? The Human Rights Program at Purdue is grateful to partner with the International Students and Scholars (ISS) Office for the “Thirty Years After Global 1989” event, and is most appreciative of the generous co-sponsorship from the Departments of History, Political Science, and Philosophy, in addition to substantial support from the Purdue 150 Years of Giant Leaps Ideas Festival from both the College of Liberal Arts and the Purdue University.
